Professional COMM 2/11: MLK Jr. and silence

"Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter" - MLK Jr.
--------------------------------------------
I think Dr. King is referring to the importance of speaking out about what you believe in and what you feel. To be human is to try and assert your will on the universe around you, thus to give up that desire for changing things -is to become less human. When we no longer have the energy or the courage to make ourselves heard... we are consenting to let others speak and think for us. If others are thinking for us then we no longer need to think. Without thinking, the mind becomes stagnate... and the mind that ceases to function, ceases to exist.

I believe this quote in a fundamental way... our lives are not 'our' lives unless we care enough to take as much control over them as we possibly can.

I agree with you. when us as americans let the "upper" class of people talk and think for us we are no longer needed to help make dessions for ourself. there for it would leave us to be unheard and left to be puppets.
