English IV 2/4: William Carlos Williams and the Function of Poetry

American poet William Carlos Williams said that the goal of a poem is

"to refine, to clarify, to intensify that eternal moment in which we alone live."

Why do you think poetry is important? If you think it isn't important then make an argument as to why it isn't. If you wish to change what Williams states as the 'goal' of poetry; how would you change it?
